The History of the Fortress

Bergenhus is one of Norway’s oldest and best-preserved fortresses, with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. The fortress has played a central role in the country’s development—as a royal seat, a center of power, and a cultural site—and today stands as an important national heritage monument.

The Royal Seat of Power

In the 13th century, the area was developed into a royal complex. The royal estate was expanded, and Håkon’s Hall—a magnificent stone structure—was built to host royal ceremonies and receptions. At that time, Bergen was a political powerhouse in the Norwegian kingdom, and the fortress reflected the strength and authority of the established monarchy.

Changes Under the Union

When Norway entered into union with Denmark in the 16th century, Bergen ceased to function as a royal residence. However, Bergenhus retained its importance, serving as the administrative and political center for Western and Northern Norway for several centuries.

A Living Cultural Environment

Today, Bergenhus is composed of medieval buildings, later fortifications, and lush parklands. It is a place where different historical periods meet—from Stone Age traces at Koengen to modern use as a concert venue and cultural park. The site conveys more than just military history; it tells a story of societal development, architecture, and daily life throughout the ages.

Norway’s fortresses are historic military strongholds and vibrant cultural venues, attracting millions of visitors each year. They are essential landmarks in their communities—serving as destinations, attractions, and places of business.

These fortresses are also spaces where history meets the present, and where civil society encounters the Armed Forces.

As property managers, our role is to support development that brings these places to life while preserving their legacy.
We do this by keeping the fortresses open and accessible to the public, while leasing buildings and outdoor areas to businesses that offer memorable experiences.

We are responsible for the maintenance of buildings and fortress walls, as well as the care of green and public areas.
