Follow the signs at the inner fortress. There are also toilets at Fredriksten kro.
The outer part of the fortress is relatively flat, but the main part of the built-up area is so steep that it is practically impossible to get around by wheelchair (there is an altitude difference of almost 100 metres between the upper and lower parts of the fortress). The museums are not adapted for the disabled. There is no elevator in the buildings.
Safety and availability
Fredriksten is a fortress with high walls. Some of them are not secured. Be careful when walking along the fortress walls, and keep a close eye on your children. Be aware that cobblestones and stairs can be slippery in rainy weather and in the winter.
Visitors are not allowed to remove parts of buildings, bricks, timber or other loose objects from the fortress.
Throw waste in the litter bins, and recycle if possible.
Bring the dog
All dogs must be leashed at all times.
Barbecuing is only allowed on the barbecue and picnic area at Gyldenløve fort. It is forbidden to use disposable grills and light fires all year round.
There is a Tourist Information Office just inside the entrance, where you can experience a multi-media presentation about the history of the fortress.
