This 17th century fortress is a fantastic arena for the dissemination of culture and history to audiences today. The fortress offers restaurants, guided tours, museums and other regular activities and events to visitors.

Visiting information

 

Historical sound and light show
A show featuring the events, people and history through 350 years is staged on the fortress walls in the inner fortress. It is shown every night.

• At 19.00 from 10 Oct. – 19 March
• At 21.00 from 20 March – 10 April
• At 22.00 from 11 April – 8 May
• At 23.00 from 9 May – 6 June
• At 24.00 from 7 June – 7 July
• At 23.00 from 8 July – 7 Aug.
• At 22.00 from 8 Aug. – 31 Aug.
• At 21.00 from 1 Sept. – 9 Oct.

Nature trail
Fun and educational nature trail for children and adults alike. Norwegian and English texts at the points on the trail. The trail consists of a start sign and 13 object/point signs. The trail is 700 metres long and goes from the Charles XII memorial stone and around Gyldenløve fort. At each point, information is provided and you have to find the answers to questions about nature at the point (tree, plant, stone etc.)

The fortress trail
 Walk at your own speed and learn about the nature, unique architecture and history of the fortress through the centuries. The map of the trail provides information about historical events and famous people, and what daily life was like within the thick walls. The map also contains information about the design of the fortress, and explains what, for most of us, are unfamiliar words and expressions about buildings, weapons and other objects the fortress.

Salutes
Salutes are fired for the birthdays of the King and Queen, and the Crown Prince and Crown Princess, VE Day, National Day and Union Dissolution
Day at 12.00 (13.00 on Sundays).

Dates of ordinary salutes
21 February - the King's birthday
8 May – VE Day
17 May – Constitution Day
7 June – Union Dissolution Day
4 July - the Queen's birthday
20 July - the Crown Prince's birthday
19 August - the Crown Princess's birthday.

Tips for other things you can do
Large parts of the fortress comprise areas of open parkland that you can use for your own recreation. Visitors can have picnics, play ball games or go for a walk in these areas. As long as you show due consideration for the historical surroundings, the only limit is your imagination.
