Visitor Centre

The Visitor Centre is located in ’the long red house’ from 1774 by the Carp pond. It is the natural starting point for an exploration of Akershus fortress.

Our staff is up to date on the cultural happenings and activities on the grounds. We offer exciting and informative exhibitions on the history of Akershus fortress and have scheduled guided tours all through the year. The Visitor Centre also has a small sales shop where we sell warm beverages and books related to the history of Akershus fortress. Heartily welcome!

Eksplore the history of Akershus Fortress 

The prisoners of Akershus – from The Middle Ages to 1950
The exhibition, which consists of text, photos and artefacts follows the history of prisoners at Akershus castle in The Middle Ages, and inside the fortress up until the Settlement after WW2, and the prison's final closure in 1950.

1716 - The siege
300 years ago the 'Lion of the North', King Charles XII of Sweden, launched an attack on Norway. The Swedes captured Christiania (Oslo) Town and laid siege upon Akershus fortress. This exhibition follows the story of the siege day-to-day from the crossing of the Border to the Swedish retreat 39 event filled days later.

Akershus fortress from The Middle Ages until today
Join us for a walk on the fortress grounds and hear about the beginnings of Akershus, daily life through the centuries, Royal visits and celebrations and hostile sieges. We promise fun, exciting and gruesome glimpses from the fortress' first 700 years!
